About this event

Learn to sew with zippers!

Join this hands-on workshop where you’ll learn the basics of zipper sewing as you create a simple zipper pouch. Designed for people with basic sewing skills who may be new to sewing zippers, this class is a chance to make something functional, give the zipper foot a whirl, and add a new skill to your sewing toolbox.

We will learn how to use a sewing machine zipper foot, how to position and sew a zipper onto fabric, and tips and tricks to make zipper sewing feel a little less intimidating.

Using instructor-provided vintage textiles and fabric scraps, you’ll create a small pouch featuring a contrasting interior fabric that’s perfect for organizing everyday essentials or giving as a handmade gift. Get started on your handmade holiday gifts and use up your fabric scraps!

All fabric and notions will be provided. However, each student needs to bring a sewing machine. Don't forget your power cord & pedal!

Helpful Optional Supplies:

Regular presser foot

Zipper presser foot (a narrow foot that allows a machine to stitch close to zipper teeth for a neat finish; you’re welcome to borrow one of ours if you’re not sure you have one)

Fabric scissors and/or snips

Straight pins

Thread

A few bobbins that fit your machine

Extra spare needles for your machine (just in case)

Nicole Hess is an improv quilter and fiber artist based in Fort Collins. She works with thrifted textiles, vintage linens, and fabric scraps, transforming reclaimed materials into small, functional, one-of-a-kind pieces like zipper pouches, hats, and mini quilts. Her creations are rooted in experimentation, intuitive making, and the belief that the process matters just as much as the final piece.

Each Radish class offers one solidarity ticket at a greatly reduced rate, in order to offer greater financial accessibility. This ticket is for Black/Indigenous/PeopleOfColor folks, solo parents, folks with medical debt, etc. No questions asked. Limit to one solidarity ticket per month- because if someone is able to purchase multiple solidarity tickets per month, they should be consolidating that into one full price ticket.

All workshop purchases are subject to our refund policy: a 50% refund is available until 48 hours before workshop. No refund is available within 48 hours of workshop start time. If a workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified 24 hours before via email.
