ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Speeding claimed 237 lives on Colorado roads in 2024 and the Colorado Department of Transportation launched a statewide campaign urging drivers in our local communities to slow down—using graphic statistics and new enforcement tools to warn that saving seconds is not worth a life lost.  North Forty News

  • Fort Collins Police Services urge drivers to remain alert and courteous after a Consumer Affairs report ranked Colorado third-worst for roadrage incidents. They advise motorists to avoid aggressive maneuvers, offer an apology wave if needed, and call 911 when unsafe conditions arise — measures that help keep everyone safe.  North Forty News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Liberty Common High School in the Poudre School District was ranked No. 2 in Colorado on U.S. News & World Report’s best high schools list—joining four other PSD schools in Colorado’s top 100—while rankings based on test scores, graduation rates and college readiness guided the assessment.  The Coloradoan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Poudre Fire Authority wildland firefighters deployed to Northern California on August 16 to the Big Bend area (the initial ground responders to an emerging wildfire) and worked with air crews and additional engines to bring the blaze under control. They gained valuable experience that will improve fire response back in Northern Colorado.  North Forty News
  • Wildlife officials in Rocky Mountain National Park are closing several popular trails in Kawuneeche Valley — including the Colorado River Trail and Grand Ditch — through Sunday, Aug. 31 to remove invasive brook trout and reintroduce native Greenback cutthroat trout.  CBS Colorado
  • Due to high levels of infected Culex mosquitoes found last week, Fort Collins and Larimer County Health and Environment Department will fumigate the northeast part of the city and unincorporated areas on August 28 if weather permits. The spraying will be done by trucks using a permethrin-based product at dusk until 2 a.m.—if rain disrupts the plans, the fumigation will be rescheduled for August 31 and residents should stay indoors with doors and windows closed for up to 60 minutes.  City of Fort Collins

  • Colorado lawmakers passed a bill on Aug. 25 that gives $1.8 million to keep the wolf reintroduction program going while moving $264,268 to boost health insurance funding—wolf advocates praise the move as some groups push to repeal the voter measure.
